The chin is an important component of the overall facial profile. However, if the chin is too small then a chin implant is required for correction.

The Procedure For Chin Augmentation
A patient's chin may be augmented in size through a mouth incision made behind the lower lip to place an implant. Small sutures are used to close the incision, and external bandages are applied to the area.

What to Expect During and After Chin or Cheek Augmentation Surgery
Anesthesia: Sedation or general.
Location of operation: Office or hospital.
Length of surgery: 30 minutes for chin implant, 45-60 minutes for cheek implants.
Length of stay: Outpatient (home same day).
Discomfort: Mild to moderate. Anticipate 2-7 days of prescription pain medication.
Bruising: Uncommon.
Swelling: Lasts 1-2 weeks following chin implant and 2-3 weeks following cheek implants. You can reduce swelling through constant head elevation and frequent application of ice.
Stitches: If the incisions are inside your mouth, then absorbable stitches will be used and do not require removal. If skin incisions are used, stitches will be removed in 5 days.
Make-up: May be worn the day after surgery.
Presentable in public: You will be presentable in one to two weeks.
Work: You may feel capable of returning within 2-5 days, but your appearance will be the limiting factor.
Exercise: May be resumed in 2 weeks.
Final result: Will be seen between one and two months.

After Your Chin Implant Surgery
There is a minimal amount of discomfort following your procedure. There will be swelling and bruising that may last from seven to ten days. Keeping your head elevated and apply cold compresses will help to reduce swelling. As your incisions heal, you will notice some itching and possibly some numbness. These symptoms will diminish over time. You may wear make-up after three days and your sutures will dissolve in a few weeks. Strenuous activity is restricted for six weeks.
Keeping the head slightly elevated when reclining and applying cold compresses may help reduce swelling. Chewing may be difficult for four seven days and numbness around the treated area may occur for a period of time. Brushing the teeth is sometimes difficult for several days.
